In early 2005, Ward auditioned for Series 2, where he impressed all three judges and passed through to the next round. His was placed into the 16-24s category that was then mentored by Louis, and Ward was chosen to be among Louis's top 4 contestants and perform on the live shows. Ward quickly became the Bookmakers' favourite to win the show, and after making it to the grand final, he defeated Simon Cowell's duo Journey South and Sharon Osbourne's over-25 singer Andy Abraham and was crowned as the winner of The X Factor 2005. He had not fallen into the bottom two throughout the entire competition, and won by a margin of 1.2% of the vote, out of a reported 10.8 million phone votes cast by viewers. Immediately after the competition, his mentor Louis Walsh became his manager under a joint venture with Global Publishing and Walsh Global Management.

Post The X FactorEdit

Shayne's winner's single became the UK Christmas #1 and at the time of release was the fastest selling winner's single as well as the third-fastest selling song of all-time in the UK. As of 2015, it is the only original song released by a winner.

To date he has released four studio albums, all of which reached the UK Top 20, but in 2011 it was announced that he had been dropped by Syco Music after six years.  His latest album was released independently via Pledgemusic.

He has also branched out into musical theater and in 2013 appeared as a contestant on ITV's "Dancing on Ice".  He was the fifth celebrity to be eliminated.

In 2015, it was announced that he had joined the cast of soap opera "Coronation Street" on a one year contract. He went on to win Best Newcomer at the 2016 National Television Awards.
