Matthew Sheridan Cardle (born April 15, 1983) is an English singer-songwriter who rose to fame after winning Series 7 of The X Factor in 2010. He was mentored by Dannii Minogue in the Boys category.

BackgroundEdit

Prior to the show, he worked as a bricklayer, postman, milkman, and as a painter and decorator and was part of a band called Seven Summers as the lead guitarist and singer. He also had played in a band called Darwyn.

The X FactorEdit

Cardle auditioned in London with the Amy Whinehouse song, "You Know I'm No Good." He got all three yeses and proceeded on to Bootcamp. He was put into the over 25s category and he sang "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". Later, after Nicole Scherzinger changed "over 25s" to "over 28s", he was put into the Boys category. He was put through to judges houses where he and the rest of the boys flew to Australia to find out their mentor was Dannii Minogue. She selected him to be one of her Top 3 finalists.

Week after week, he gave standout performances, most notably a rendition of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and made it to the final along with Rebecca Ferguson, One Direction and Cher Lloyd.

His final performance was of Biffy Clyro's "Many of Horrors" which would be released as the winner's single "When We Collide". He was crowned the winner and voting statistics released after the show revealed that he had topped the vote every week from Week 2 onwards. signed a deal with Syco Music in a joint venture with Columbia Records, making him the first X Factor winner not to be signed exclusively to Simon Cowell's record company, and released his first single, "When We Collide", after he had won. The single was the UK Christmas #1.

Post The X FactorEdit

On August 18, 2011, Cardle announced that his first album, Letters, would be released on October 17, 2011. Label departureEdit

On May 20, 2012 Cardle announced via Twitter that he had parted ways with Sony Music and Columbia Records, who declined to comment on the situation. In an October 2012 interview, he explained that his reason for leaving Sony was because he wasn't a priority, and that their focus was more on the group One Direction, who have acheived huge success all over the world. Despite admitting to being proud of the group, whom he competed against during series 7, for their success, Cardle admitted that, "I needed to be a bit selfish. I asked Sony to let me go and they said OK."
