Mary Byrne is an Irish singer who participated in Series 7 of The X Factor as part of the Over 28s category mentored by Louis Walsh. She was controversially eliminated at the semi final stage, finishing in 5th place.
The X FactorEdit
She impressed the judges and audience with her powerful voice with a performance of "I Who Have Nothing". Due to being a cashier in supermarket chain Tesco, she soon earned the nickname "Tesco Mary" and eventually made it to Judges' Houses mentored by Louis Walsh, who chose her as part of his Top 3 for the live shows.
In Week 1, she topped the public vote and continued to poll inside the top 5 until Week 8 when she ended up in the Bottom 2 alongside Wagner. As three of the four judges voted to save her, he was eliminated from the competition.
She reached the semi final where for the first time in the show's history there was another final showdown in spite of Dermot O'Leary initially stating there would not be one, and she faced off against Cher Lloyd. For the first time ever, the judges decided who they wanted to see in the final and they voted 3-1 to send Mary home. It was later revealed that if the vote had been left to the public to decide Cher would have gone home instead as she had polled fewer votes.
Post The X FactorEdit
In spite of her being eliminated at the semi final stage, she scored a UK #1 single with her fellow finalists with a cover of David Bowie's "Heroes".
In 2010, she signed a deal with Sony Music and the following year released her debut album "Mine & Yours", which reached #6 in the UK and #1 in Ireland. In September 2011, she parted ways with Sony Music and signed with Universal to release her second album, which reached #10 in Ireland. That year, she also performed for Queen Elizabeth II to mark her trip to Ireland and supported Neil Diamond at his Dublin date at the Aviva Stadium.
Along with her deal with Universal, she also signed a deal with Decca Records to release her third studio album, which became another Top 10 hit in Ireland in 2014.
