Danyl Johnson is an English singer from Berkshire, Reading who participated in Series 6 as part of the Over 25s category mentored by Simon Cowell. He was eliminated in the semi finals, finishing in 4th place.
Previously a member of two boybands, Danyl first auditioned for the show as a soloist in 2006 but failed to make it past the producers' audition. He was also a member of a band called Empty Spaces but left when bandmate Nick Burrage did not want to audition for the show.
The X FactorEdit
Returning to audition again in 2009, he impressed the judges and audience with his rendition of "With a Little Help from My Friends", with Simon Cowell declaring it the best audition he had ever seen during his time on the show. From there, Danyl made it through bootcamp to Judges' Houses as part of the Over 25s category mentored by Cowell, who chose him as one of his Top 3 finalists for the live shows.
During the first live show, controversy arose when Dannii Minogue questioned the lyrics in the song he performed, since he had only recently publicly admitted his bisexuality. She subsequently apologized for the incident. In Week 2, he performed an unknown track by Whitney Houston which attracted harsh criticism from the singer herself and Danyl described her as "the worst guest".
He landed in the Bottom 2 the following week alongside girl group Miss Frank, who were eliminated after the judges' vote went to deadlock.
Throughout his time on the show, he topped the vote three times and made it to the semi finals, where he finished in 4th place.
Post The X FactorEdit
In August 2010 he revealed he was going to go to New York at some point to record an album, which he planned to release in 2011, having worked with artists such as Marc Broussard but an album never materialized. On 8 April 2011 he appeared on an episode of ITV drama Benidorm.
On January 23, 2017, he was shortlisted as an entrant for the UK's national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest in Kiev. Fellow finalist Lucie Jones was also shortlisted and won the right to represent the nation four days later.
