Ray originally tried out for season 1 as a solo artist but didn't make it past bootcamp. He later got another chance as a member of the all-teen pop group inTENsity, which ended up finishing in 12th place. The group wound up disbanding, and Ray focused on getting better as a singer.
The X Factor USA
Ray gave the show another try when he auditioned in Providence, Rhode Island, wowing the judges with his original song, "Count on Me". He made it past bootcamp and wowed his mentor, Britney Spears, and her guest advisor, will.i.am of the Black-Eyed Peas, at judges' homes, making it to the live shows, this time as a solo artist. Despite some critics questioning his vocal abilities based on some of his performances, the public have continued to vote him through.
He was eliminated on November 22, 2012, finishing in 10th place.
Ray admitted in a UStream chat on January 5, 2013 that he and Normani Hamilton of Fifth Harmony were dating. The couple have since split up. He also recently tweeted his support for his former inTENsity groupmate Ellona Santiago when she tried out for season 3 of X Factor USA.
